Yoel Romero is set to return to the Octagon this weekend at UFC 248 event in hopes of claiming the UFC Middleweight title.
He has received a lot of criticism, due to the fact that Romero is coming off 2 losses against Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa.
Regardless of his current record, this is a contest that Israel Adesanya asked for, as he believes that beating the “Soldier of God” is necessary for his Middleweight legacy. Adesanya explained why he asked for Romero and why he isn’t afraid of the “boogeyman”.
This will not be Romero’s first rodeo for the title as the Cuban has already had 3 opportunities to win the UFC Middleweight belt. Unfortunately, Romero missed weight in 2 of those 3 title fights, rendering him ineligible to win the title. In one of his title fights, he knocked out Luke Rockhold at UFC 221. The fight was initially for the interim UFC Middleweight title, but Romero had missed weight.
Even though the Cuban has struggled to make the Middleweight title fight weight limit of 185-pounds in the past, Yoel Romero has isn’t looking to move back up to Light-Heavyweight.
In a recent media day interview with MMA Fighting, Romero explained his decision to remain at Middleweight:
“When I’m training, I go down (in weight), and when I’m training, normally when I have a good training, (I weigh a) maximum 210 (pounds),” Romero said. “It’s not possible. When I’m not training, boom – yeah, heavyweight. But when I’m training – 210, 208, 210, 208. It’s not possible for me. It’s not possible because I’m training good. I have respect for my job. When I’m training, I know what I need to do for good training.”
“When you don’t sleep good, and when (you’re not eating healthy), something wrong happens: mistake. … When I have a good training, it’s not possible to go up. The (potential opponents) are so heavy.”
