Last night’s UFC 248 event was headlined by a UFC middleweight championship title fight featuring Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero.
The challenger, Yoel Romero (13-4 MMA) stepped in the Octagon at UFC 248 on a 2-fight losing skid, having lost two close decisions to Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa. The Cuban fighter is still widely considered to be the most dangerous fighter in UFC middleweight division.
Israel Adesanya was initially expected to face the Brazilian powerhouse Paulo Costa, who withdrew from the bout due to a bicep injury. The undefeated champion decided to not wait for Costa to make his return and instead opted to fight Romero in the meantime. Adesanya became the UFC middleweight champion at October’s UFC 243 event, where he disposed of the former champion Robert Whittaker by knockout in the 2nd-round.
The two men met in the Octagon at UFC 248, in a contest that many fans viewed as somewhat lackluster. Throughout the entire duration of the 5-round main event, fans could be heard booing from the stands.
Romero appeared to be conserving his energy throughout the fight and attempting to lure the undefeated champion into commiting to something and to capitalize on his mistakes. Adesanya displayed high fight IQ, not falling for Romero’s tricks, sticking to his game plan and fighting a very technical battle against the dangerous Cuban.
