UFC’s Women’s Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko is set for her 4th title defense against the Scottish contender Joanne Calderwood at UFC 251 on June 6, 2020.
Calderwood was one of the fighters listed by Valentina Shevchenko following the champion’s UFC 247 win and now has been confirmed as the next in line. The fight announcement was first reported by Brett Okamoto of ESPN.
“Breaking: Valentina Shevchenko’s (@BullettValentina) next title defense will come against Joanne Calderwood (@DRkneevil) at UFC 251 on June 6. Both sides have agreed to the fight, per sources,” Okamoto tweeted.
Valentina Shevchenko is fresh off of a dominant 3rd round TKO victory over Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 247. Prior to that, she secured a decision victory over Liz Carmouche. In her 1st title defense at UFC 238, Shevchenko scored a beautiful head kick knockout over Jessica Eye. To win the belt, she had defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 231.
The 31-year-old female fighter from Kyrgyzstan is ranked #2 in the female pound-for-pound list. Before the Women’s Flyweight division was added, Valentina Shevchenko fought at Women’s Bantamweight. She even fought for the belt against Amanda Nunes, but lost the fight by split-decision, in a fight, which many thought she won.
Meanwhile, Joanne Calderwood returned to the win bracket last time out with a decision win over Andrea Lee at UFC 242. In the fight prior, she lost to Chookagian by UD to snap her 2-fight win streak where she had bested Ariane Lipski and Kalindra Faria.
The location of UFC 251 is currently unknown at this time, but, UFC president Dana White recently spoke about looking to book Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 2 for that card, so it might happen in Australia.
