Dana White announced that they are working on a rematch between UFC Light-Heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Dominick Reyes during a recent Instagram Live Stream.
With the news of this, it seems that rising Polish Light-Heavyweight standout Jan Blachowicz will not be getting the next title shot against Jon Jones.
Blachowicz picked up a viscous 1st-round knockout over Corey Anderson in his last outing at UFC Rio Rancho. The explosive finish was Blachowicz’s 3rd straight win, with the other wins being over Luke Rockhold and Jacare Souza. It seemed to have set the Pole up for a title shot against Jon Jones, with Blachowicz even suggesting a 4-man LHW tournament.
The two had even seemingly agreed to fight on Twitter shortly following UFC Rio Rancho.
Despite his efforts at trying to land the title shot, Dana White has now revealed that the UFC is planning to go a different route.
The next UFC Light-Heavyweight title shot will instead go to Dominick Reyes, who lost to Jones by a controversial decision at UFC 247 last month. The announcement was reported by Jon Realejo from bloodycanvas.net.
“Dana White just said on his Instagram live stream that they’re looking to book Jones/Reyes rematch. Tough break for Jan Blachowicz but I don’t hate it”
While it is definitely disappointing news for Jan Blachowicz, it’s hard to deny Dominick Reyes a rematch against Jon Jones. Jones won their 1st fight by unanimous decision, but many fans and analysts thought that it was actually Reyes, who deserved the win.
There is no timeline for Jones vs. Reyes 2 at the moment. It’s possible that the rematch might happen this summer, perhaps at July’s International Fight Week in Las Vegas.
