Jose Aldo’s former opponent Renato Moicano believes Aldo getting a title shot at UFC 250 isn’t fair to the rest of the division.
Henry Cejudo is set defend his Bantamweight title at UFC 250 against Jose Aldo, who has only had 1 fight in the division and is currently on a 2-fight losing streak. This matchup was requested by the champion Cejudo, who believed that Aldo had done enough to edge out a win against Marlon Moraes at UFC 245, but was “robbed”. UFC president Dana White was on board with the idea due to Jose Aldo being a legend of the sport.
In a recent interview with BJPENN.com Renato Moicano said that it’s crazy for a fighter to get a title shot, while being on a losing streak:
“It is crazy. I watched his last fight against Marlon and I thought Marlon clearly won that fight. It is not good that he is getting a title shot coming from two losses,” Moicano said “I just don’t know if it is the right move, but I don’t know how the business is. It isn’t a smart decision but the UFC knows how to do things. That is why they are the best promotion in MMA.”
He says it’s not his place to say, since it is not in his division, but Moicano admits that if it happened to him, he would be angry:
“I really don’t know because it isn’t my division. But, if I was someone like Yan or Sterling, someone on a streak of wins, I would for sure be upset about Aldo getting the shot,” he said. “I would be angry about that.”
Renato Moicano lost to Jose Aldo back at UFC Fight Night 144 in 2019, a loss that sent him on a 2-fight losing streak. Moicano is scheduled to face Damir Hadžović at Lightweight at UFC Fight Night 170 in March.
