UFC Women’s Strawweight fighter Karolina Kowalkiewicz has said she needs to undergo an eye surgery after suffering a broken facial bone at UFC Auckland.
Kowalkiewicz lost a one sided unanimous decision to Yan Xiaonan on the main card of last weekend’s UFC Auckland event. This was her 4th straight loss following defeats to Alexa Grasso, Jessica Andrade, and Michelle Waterson. Unfortunately for Kowalkiewicz, she was beaten to the punch nearly the whole fight by the skilled Chinese women’s fighter Yan Xiaonan.
The Polish women’s fighter took to her social media and revealed to her fans that she has a broken bone above her eye. She will be staying in Auckland for surgery before she is able to fly home to her country.
This is what Karolina Kowalkiewicz had to say to her fans (via MMAJim).
“Per her Instagram story, @KarolinaMMA has confirmed she “broke a bone above her eye.” She added she “couldn’t see anything, was seeing double, and everything was in the fog.””
“She adds after that she needs an operation and that she will have to stay in New Zealand for the minute as flying with this eye injury would be dangerous.”
In her latest loss to Xiaonan, some fans and media are speculating that Kowalkiewicz could potentially be looking to retire from the sport of MMA. The former KSW Women’s Flyweight champion started her UFC career with 3 straight wins, including a notable split decision victory over former champ Rose Namajunas, but since is just 2-6 over her last 8 bouts, having taken quite a bit of damage, including a knockout loss to Jessica Andrade in September, 2018.
If Karolina Kowalkiewicz decides to keep going instead of retiring, with 4 straight losses it seems likely the UFC matchmakers could potentially look to release her.
