Paulo Costa talks about the main event at UFC 248 that featured a UFC middleweight title fight between Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero, calling it “shameful”.
Last night Adesanya defended his UFC middleweight title against Romero, winning by a close unanimous decision. The fight was seen as somewhat of a lacklustre performance, with many fans booing throughout the entire duration of the bout. The contest lacked aggressiveness and was generally slow paced. At the end of the 1st round, Romero had only landed 4 significant strikes, which was still double off Adesanya’s 2 significant strikes.
Paulo Costa was in attendance for the UFC 248 main event and was not impressed by what he saw from his future opponent.
The Brazilian fighter was initially scheduled to fight Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title, but was forced to withdraw from the bout after suffering a bicep injury. Costa tried to use a fake doctor to get medically cleared by the UFC. When that didn’t work out, Adesanya chose to defend his title against Romero, instead of waiting for Costa to recover from his injury. The two undefeated middleweights are now expected to face each other next.
Costa talked to the media during the UFC 248 post-fight press conference, giving his thoughts on the main event:
“Adesanya’s nothing. Adesanya is the most shameful champion I have seen ever. He just runs. He’s nothing. He’s nothing. He’s scared. I think he don’t deserve to talk about him. Was a sh*t fight, was sh*t. I will make him cry. I will hit him very badly,” Costa said.
Paulo Costa clearly wasn’t impressed by the champion’s performance against Yoel Romero. In his previous fight, Costa also beat Romero by a close decision at UFC 241. That contest turned out to be an action packed 3-round battle that earned the 2 fighters a “Fight of the Night” bonus. The Brazilian recently received medical clearance to resume training and will look to get back in the Octagon against Adesanya as soon as possible.
