During a recent Dominance MMA Management event, UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman listed 7 fighters, who he believes are better than Jorge Masvidal.
Kamaru Usman (16-1 MMA), is expected to make his 2nd UFC welterweight title defense against the BMF title holder Jorge Masvidal at UFC 252. The pair have been trading insults for some time now.
During a recent media event by Dominance MMA Management, Usman talked to TSN‘s Aaron Bronsteter about the current state of the UFC welterweight division.
“I think it is myself (at the top), absolutely. Then I think it is Colby (Covington). Then you’ve got guys like Leon Edwards and Tyron Woodley. Those guys are there in that close race. Then you know there are killers that are coming up too that I would even put up there. Then you have the guys like Masvidal who win some lose some and are just there.”
Bronsteter then asked the champion, which fighters he would rank ahead of Jorge Masvidal and he gave a list of 7 names.
“Colby Covington, Tyron Woodley, Leon Edwards, Geoff Neal, Vicente Luque, Abdul Razak Alhassan and Santiago Ponzinibbio.” Usman said.
Usman became the UFC welterweight champion at UFC 235 in March of 2019, after a comfortable decision win over the former champion Tyron Woodley. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ then went on to make his 1st-title defense at UFC 245, where he defeated Colby Covington via 5th-round TKO.
Meanwhile, Jorge Masvidal arguably had the best year of his career in 2019 with 3 consecutive stoppage wins over the likes Darren Till, Ben Askren and Nate Diaz. Masvidal scored the fastest knockout in UFC history in his win over Askren.
UFC President Dana White is expected to officially announce the bout between the two men in the coming weeks.
