Justin Gaethje sent Karolina Kowalkiewicz a message of support after she suffered a tough loss at last weekend’s at UFC Auckland.
UFC Auckland event at Spark Arena this past weekend made headlines for different reasons and while a lot of those came from the main event, there is still a lot that can be said for the rest of the card. One of the biggest headlines coming out of UFC Auckland was Karolina Kowalkiewicz’s loss to Yan Xiaonan via unanimous decision, which was her 4th straight loss.
Kowalkiewicz reflected on her injuries on social media, which included posting up a picture of her eye injury. Many fighters were quick to send their best wishes and get well soon messages — including UFC Lightweight contender Justin Gaethje.
“Rest up,” Gaethje wrote on Twitter. “You are gangster.”
A lot of fans are now expecting Karolina Kowalkiewicz to take a break from fighting the Octagon, and with 4 straight losses and 6 defeats in her last 8, some have suggested she should make the jump over to a different promotion or even retire.
Justin Gaethje is a fighter who knows what it means to be suffer a setback, with “The Highlight” losing 2 fairly notable back-to-back fight by stoppage at the hands of Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier back in late 2017 and early 2018. Since then, Gaethje has been on an absolute tear in the division with 3 straight finishes to his name against James Vick, Edson Barboza and Donald Cerrone.
While Gaethje is trying to get a fight against Conor McGregor in the summer, Kowalkiewicz probably doesn’t really know what her next move will be. There was once a time, where it seemed as if she had the potential to be champion, but after suffering these setbacks she needs to reassess what happens next with her career.
If she decides to fight under a different promotion, she should have plenty of options, including the premier Polish MMA promotion – KSW. Ironically, they have an event coming up in her hometown of Lodz, although she obviously wouldn’t be fit to compete that soon. Prior to coming over to the UFC, Kowalkiewicz was 5-0 in KSW and she was also able to win the KSW Women’s Flyweight title.
