Former UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk suffered a gruesome injury in her fight against Weili Zhang at UFC 248.
Jedrzejczyk challenged Zhang for her UFC women’s strawweight title in the co-main event at last night’s UFC 248. The two women showed incredible heart, skill and determination in a highly action packed 25-minute bout, which is now regarded by many as the greatest women’s MMA fight of all time. After 5-rounds of trading shots, it was Zhang who got the nod in a close split decision victory, retaining her title.
The fight turned into an all-out-war from the opening bell, with both fighters trading heavy shots till the end of the fight. Both fighters looked badly damaged, but Jedrzejczyk developed a serious hematoma on her forehead in the 3rd round. It was one of the most gruesome injuries ever seen in the Octagon, but thankfully the former champion wasn’t dangerously hurt.
Jedrzejczyk’s team have provided a health update for their fighter (from ESPN’s Ariel Helwani).
“Joanna Jędrzejczyk was just discharged from the hospital, according to her team. No significant injuries, they said. Here she is leaving moments ago.”
Jedrzejczyk lost last night’s co-main event at UFC 248 by a close split decision. Despite losing, she earned a lot of respect from the MMA community and other fighters. Jedrzejczyk now moves to 0-4 in her last 4 title fights in the women’s 115lbs and 125lbs divisions, but still remains an elite fighter.
What comes next for the Polish fighter remains to be seen at this point. Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a solid contender in the women’s strawweight division and could very well be granted a rematch against Weili Zhang.
