UFC would-be Flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo is happy to give Joseph Benavidez a rematch after missing weight for their main event at UFC Norfolk.
Figueiredo put Benavidez away in the 2nd-round in the main event of UFC Norfolk. The win should have made Figueiredo the new UFC Flyweight champion, but since he missed weight he became ineligible to win the title. The outcome of this bout proved to be one of the worst-case scenarios for the UFC, who have previously expressed interest in shutting down the Men’s Flyweight division.
Since Figueiredo missed weight, his win over Benavidez has an asterix attached to it. One of the ways that Figueiredo can redeem himself is granting Benavidez a rematch and making weight this time around, leaving no doubt who the better man is. Figueiredo’s manager Wallid Ismail has now said that the UFC is talking about a potential rematch.
Ismail spoke to MMAFighting.com about a potential rematch between Figueiredo and Benavidez.
“Joseph Benavidez was a warrior for accepting to fight him one kilo overweight and deserves the rematch. We like the guy, but on fight week it’s war, man. Since the UFC isn’t satisfied and wants another fight, it’s all good, the war continues,” Ismail said.
Ismail doesn’t know when a potential rematch could take place, but he is hoping that Benavidez heals up quickly and the UFC are interested in running it back.
“We just wanna know when Benavidez wants to fight. But, please, don’t take too long,” Ismail said. He suggested that UFC 252 this July in Las Vegas would be a great card for the rematch between Figueiredo and Benavidez.
