In a media day interview UFC president Dana White talked about the reason behind booking a rematch between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez.
The two men fought in the main event of last weekend’s UFC Norfolk for the vacant UFC Flyweight title, which only for Benavidez to capture. That was because Figueiredo missed the championship weight limit by 2.5lbs.
After an action packed 1st-round, which saw Deiveson Figueiredo almost catch Joseph Benavidez with an armbar, it went to a 2nd-round of action. During the round, Figueiredo and Benavidez accidentally clashed heads, which opened up a major cut on the head of Benavidez. Not long after the clash of head, it was the ‘God of War’ who found a home for a beautiful straight right, which sent Benavidez bouncing off the canvas. Figueiredo delivered some final hammer fists, before the referee called a stop to the contest.
UFC president Dana White has stated his intention to book a rematch between the two men and in a recent media day interview for UFC 248, he revealed that he believes the clash of heads between Deiveson Figueiredo and Joseph Benavidez had a lot to do with the outcome of the fight.
“I think the headbutt had a lot to do with the knockout. Not taking anything away from him, it was a great fight. But I think you have to do that fight again.” Dana White said via TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter.
Any potential dates or location for the rematch are unknown at this time. The former UFC Flyweight champion Henry Cejudo has come out and said that he plans on returning to the Flyweight division, after his fight with Jose Aldo at UFC 250 in May. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz backed up his client’s comments on this. “Triple C” has even offered to take on both, Aldo and Figueiredo on the same night, referring to the former Featherweight champion as “Jose Baldo”.
