UFC president Dana White stated that he wants Sean O’Malley to return to action “quick” following his 1st-round win at UFC 248.
Sean O’Malley returned to action at UFC 248 after a 2-year lay off due to issues with USADA. The highly touted bantamweight prospect received a 6-month suspension from USADA after failing a drug test, which was later attributed to a contaminated supplement. His troubles did not end there, as he spent the next year and a half dealing with issues that arose from his initial drug test failure. O’Malley eventually made his return to the Octagon at last weekend’s UFC 248 event and made quick work of Jose Quinonez with a 1st-round TKO victory. He received a $50,000 (£38,000) “Performance of the Night” bonus following his performance, and the UFC president expects O’Malley to make a quick turnaround.
White spoke with TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter after UFC 248 and revealed that he wants to get O’Malley another fight quickly. See what the UFC president had to say below:
“Yeah, he looked incredible after a layoff. You know, when you think about how he had time to heal, he had a minor surgery when he was out, worked on things. He looks really good and I’m looking forward to getting him back in there quick,” White said.
Following his victory over Quinonez, O’Malley improved his undefeated professional MMA record to 11-0, with 3 wins inside the Octagon. Prior to that, O’Malley collected wins over Terrion Ware and Andre Soukhamthath. He rose to prominence after some spectacular performances on Dana White’s Contender Series back in 2017.
It would make sense for the UFC to step up his competition, matching O’Malley up against somebody in the top-15. The rising bantamweight prospect is just 25 years of age and has the potential to become a big star in MMA. UFC president Dana White recently talked about O’Malley’s star potential, calling him an “exciting fighter” and saying that “people love him”.
