If Dan Hooker isn’t able to fight against Justin Gaethje, he has has noted that he would be like to fight against Dustin Poirier instead.
UFC Lightweight Dan Hooker is coming off the back of an action-packed win over Paul Felder at UFC Auckland. While the victory may have been seen as controversial by some who believed Felder should’ve won the decision, the fight itself proved that Hooker has the ability to do some great things in the Lightweight division.
While Lightweight is certainly a stacked division, Hooker clearly isn’t scared of calling out potential opponents, and during a recent interview with ESPN, he stated that there are 2 names on his list right now.
“If Gaethje is busy, then Poirier is the man. Either Gaethje or Poirier, those are the only two options that make sense for me.”
A fight against Gaethje was one that Hooker immediately called for after his win over Paul Felder. Justin Gaethje has put together 3 straight win as of late over James Vick, Edson Barboza and Donald Cerrone, with some recent events suggesting that he could be lined up for a fight against Conor McGregor in the summer.
Dan Hooker is clearly trying to fast track his way to the top of the Lightweight division by calling going after the big names, and this isn’t exactly the worst way of going about it. Hooker would be taking a huge risk by going up against either of these fighters, but he knows what a win would do for him. He also knows that he wouldn’t be set back too much, even if he did suffer a loss.
Dustin Poirier is still to make his comeback, since his championship loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi, with a potential fight against Nate Diaz falling through.
