Former UFC welterweight Ben Askren has lashed out at Colby Covington, stating that his “act” is real, because he really is a “dips*it” in real life.

Colby Covington has been the subject of much controversy, because of his open support of the United States president Donald Trump and insults towards other fighters. He has previously been accused of using it as a “gimmick” to sell his fights.

Ben Askren doesn’t seem to believe that it is a “gimmick”, saying that Covington is genially a “terrible person” in real life. He recently talked to Low Kick MMA, discussing his relationship with Covington:

“Well, I think he’s a terrible person,” Askren said. “I think that’s pretty well established, kind of anywhere he’s been people can’t stand him. I think that’s now being established at American Top Team and as a fighter.

Askren did give him praise, calling Covington a “pretty good” fighter:

“He’s pretty good, he almost won a world title. He does a pretty good job at promoting himself,” Askren added. “Although, you know, some people think its an act, but it’s not an act. He’s really that much of a dips**t in real life.”

Covington has previously been criticized for verbally attacking his team mates at American Top Team (ATT), including Dustin Poirier, Jorge Masvidal and Joanna Jędrzejczyk.

Jedrzejczyk has previously stated that she wants an official apology from Covington, before their relationship can return to normal.
