UFC lightweight and Kevin Lee’s former opponent Al Iaquinta isn’t happy with Lee for missing weight in his bout against Charles Oliveira at UFC Brasilia.
Kevin Lee is set to face Charles Oliveira, in what was initially scheduled to be a lightweight bout, at UFC Brasilia tonight. Lee stepped on the scales heavy and after missing weight, the bout was changed to now take place at a catchweight.
His former opponent, Al Iaquinta wasn’t impressed by Lee’s lack of effort in making weight. The pair have previously fought twice, with Iaquinta winning both outings via unanimous decision.
He took to Twitter after the news broke about Lee missing weight, calling him his “son” and an “undisciplined welterweight”:
“Very disappointed in my son”
A fan later suggested that this is justification for the introduction of a 165lbs division. Iaquinta wasn’t on board with this idea, calling Lee an “undisciplined welterweight”:
“Nooooo definitely not creating a weight class for an undisciplined welterweight”
Kevin Lee has previously competed at welterweight, losing to Rafael dos Anjos via submission at UFC Fight Night 152.
UFC Brasilia is headlined by Kevin “Motown Phenom” Lee and Charles “Do Bronx” Oliveira in a catchweight bout. It was recently announced that the event is being converted into a closed-door event due to concerns over the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.
Despite missing weight, Lee stated that the lightweight division is still his “home”. If he is able to win against Oliveira, Lee has expressed interest in fighting the rising lightweight prospect Islam Makhachev in his next fight.
Al Iaquinta isn’t the only fighter to criticize Kevin Lee over missing weight. Diego Sanchez recently unleashed his anger over current weight cutting issues in the sport of MMA, targeting Kevin Lee.
